Control leads to confidence, and stability creates an agility that excites in the all-new Outback. Subaru vehicles are gifted at inspiring confidence behind the wheel, thanks to the inherently stable design of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive paired with the uniquely balanced SUBARU BOXER engine. This system delivers power to all four wheels at all times for enhanced control on all roads and in poor conditions. It has excellent side-to-side balance and handling precision, thanks to its main components being aligned longitudinally, while its low centre of gravity creates an especially engaging and responsive drive. The unique advantages of Symmetrical AWD make for exceptionally rewarding handling and empower you to better avoid danger.
Paired with Lineartronic, the Active Torque Split AWD system responds to traction conditions, the transmission and driver inputs by continuously controlling the torque distribution front to rear.
Few other cars drive with the self-assured confidence of the Outback, so you won’t be surprised by how uniquely it is accomplished. The horizontally-opposed configuration of the SUBARU BOXER engine places the pistons 180 degrees apart, for a lower, flatter profile than other engine types. This gives the engine, and therefore the overall vehicle, a lower centre of gravity and better sense of balance. Further, the pistons’ opposing movements inherently counteract each other, naturally helping to reduce vibration.
TNow boasting improved fuel efficiency, the 2.0-litre DOHC TURBO SUBARU BOXER DIESEL engine is an appealing option for a powerful,
yet efficient passenger vehicle. A prodigious 350-Nm of peak torque is delivered at a lower 1,600 rpm for smooth power when you want it most, when you’re overtaking other cars on the road or climbing up a steep hill. This new engine is also cleaner, now meeting the Euro6b standard, and it’s quieter with less vibration for a more pleasant ride for everyone aboard. Ceramic glow plugs will also give you a faster start in cold weather.
MAX OUTPUT:
110 kW (150 PS) / 3,600 rpm
MAX TORQUE:
350 Nm (35.7 kgfm) / 1,600-2,800 rpm
FUEL CONSUMPTION (*1) :
6.1 lit./100 km (Lineartronic), 5.6 lit./100 km (6MT)
CO₂ EMISSIONS (*1) :
159 g/km (Lineartronic), 145 g/km (6MT)
Not only is it the largest, but the 3.6-litre DOHC SUBARU BOXER engine also offers smooth power delivery throughout, a quiet ride, low emissions and commendable fuel consumption. Light, compact and well balanced, it features the dual Active Valve Control System for impressive torque for when you need to pass another car or start from a stop at a red light or stop sign. To further reduce noise, vibration, fuel consumption and emissions, we also designed this engine with lower friction and more rigidity. And to help ensure your Outback gets optimal fuel consumption at every speed, the 3.6-litre engine has been paired with the smooth and efficient Lineartronic.
MAX OUTPUT:
191 kW (260 PS) / 6,000 rpm
MAX TORQUE:
350 Nm (35,7 kgfm) / 4,400 rpm
FUEL CONSUMPTION (*2) :
9.9 lit./100 km (Lineartronic)
CO₂ EMISSIONS (*2) :

Already naturally smooth and strong, we improved the Outback’s 2.5-litre DOHC engine to make it powerful and fuel efficient. We also made specific refinements to improve its mid-to low-range torque so you’ll have more power when you need it from a complete stop. You’ll also find that it’s more responsive around town and more satisfying on the highway, thanks to a remarkable 235-Nm of torque at a lower 4,000 rpm. When combined with the Lineartronic, it’s more fuel efficient and clean-running, making it kinder to your wallet and the environment.
MAX OUTPUT:
129 kW (175 PS) / 5,800 rpm
MAX TORQUE:
235 Nm (24.0 kgfm) / 4,000 rpm

Designed to get the most out of your SUBARU BOXER engine and Symmetrical AWD, the efficient Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission keeps the engine in its ideal power range to give the new Outback its class-leading fuel consumption at 6.1 lit./100km (Diesel Lineartronic). New shift controls keep the ride light, smooth and responsive on both the 2.0D and 2.5i engines, while the Lineartronic in 2.0D also handles the higher-torque output with less mechanical noise for a smoother, quieter drive. The shift controls have a new stepped variable control that stays in tune with changes in vehicle speed and engine speed, allowing the driver to feel shift points when accelerating to form a strong and comfortable connection between car and driver.
Paddle shifters are mounted on the steering wheel for fingertip control, giving you the power to select the gear ratio of the Lineartronic that best suits your driving situation. They also provide Petrol models with a six-step manual mode and Diesel models with a seven-speed manual mode for quick response on demand. The result is a sharper and sportier driving experience.
Based on your driving style, SUBARU Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) can adjust the throttle and shifting response to give you immediate power and agility when you crave it in nearly any scenario.
For reliable control and sporty satisfaction, a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission is available on the Outback 2.0D models. It’s paired with an AWD system utilizing a centre differential with viscous LSD (Limited Slip Differential). If wheel speed differs between the front and rear axles, the system helps distribute power to the wheels with the most traction. The 6-speed offers smoother, more precise shifting, along with the compact size and lightweight that add to the Outback’s sporty feel.
Very little stands in your way in the capable Outback. Symmetrical AWD ensures an outstanding grip in snow, rain or rough roads, and now thanks to X-MODE with Hill Descent Control it’s even better at handling steep inclines and harsher terrain.
The all-new X-MODE gives you reliable control with a push of a button. The technology of X-MODE takes command of the engine, transmission, Symmetrical AWD, brakes, and other components to safely navigate through bad roads, slippery surfaces and even the steepest hills. When X-MODE is activated, Hill Descent Control automatically helps to maintain a constant speed when the Outback is traveling downhill.
Make bold plans. The all-new Outback can get you almost any road you'd care to venture and thanks to the improved SUBARU BOXER engine with class-leading fuel consumption it can take you farther than ever. Rugged in appearance and performance, it also has the looks and durability to traverse a trail or make a new one.
The Outback uses an Active Grille Shutter on the front of the car to improve fuel consumption. It closes to warm up engine faster, and while driving, it also closes to reduce wind resistance and cold airflow. However when the engine gets hotter, it opens to cool off the engine.
Great care was taken to optimise the driver’s connection to the road. Symmetrical AWD with an improved chassis and steering makes the Outback more responsive and nimble, while still being as smooth and controlled as ever.
Take on nearly any road in nearly any condition with confidence in the all-new Outback. The improved chassis supplies a superior ride quality, while a strengthened body torsional rigidity makes for a quieter, more comfortable drive with improved steering stability and durability.
